Welcome to AAGE

The AAGE (African-American German Exchange) e.V., is a non-profit organization founded to offer support and provide cultural awareness to the European population through cultural events, educational courses and social services. We hope that through our program we can help eliminate some of the social tension which exists in our society. We believe that a positive interaction between cultures can be a stepping stone towards a society where people live in harmony and peace with each other.

African-Americans have lived and worked in Germany many years. Artists, authors and intellectuals have been here since early times. Military and civilians have been present in Germany since the first and second world wars. In the 60s and 70s there was a large influx of African-American intellectuals, culturists and civilrights activists. During extensive research and personal interviews, it was noticed that there are many misintepretations and little knowledge of the activities of African-Americans in general.

There are organizations for various minority groups in Germany. Even though African-Americans have been here for a long time
and have left their footprints here, there is not one organization, especially in Frankfurt, that has put a spotlight on African-
American culture. A lot of people, young and old, may have heard of Dr. M.L. King and Malcolm X, but that is basically as far
as it has gone. There have been many more achievements that no one raised in Germany has heard of and this is what we should promote.

The goal of AAGE is to support:

  • African-Americans who come to live in Germany should be informed about the living conditions in this country
  • German nationals who are interested in the African-American culture
  • Children of mixed heritage who have been raised without having any connection to their African-American heritage due to absense of their fathers
